Where do you need an ID for a SIM card?
A rental never needs an ID upload. A local prepaid SIM often does: the table below sums up the rule in each country, with the source on the country page.
| Country | Prepaid SIM rule | Regulator |
|---|---|---|
| United States | No federal registration duty | FCC |
| United Kingdom | No registration duty | Ofcom |
| Canada | No federal law found | CRTC |
| Germany | ID check before activation (§ 172 TKG) | Bundesnetzagentur |
| France | ID required by operators | Arcep |
| Netherlands | No registration duty | ACM |
| Spain | ID register (Ley 25/2007) | CNMC |
| Italy | ID check before activation | AGCOM |
| Poland | Registration since 2016 | UKE |
| Sweden | Registration since 1 Aug 2022 | PTS |
| Australia | ID verified before activation | ACMA |
| Brazil | Registration (Lei 10.703/2003) | Anatel |
| Mexico | CURP line registry, 2026 | CRT |
| Indonesia | NIK + face biometrics (2026) | Komdigi |
How do I pick the right country?
- Pick the country the service or the people texting you expect. A service that checks numbers usually looks at the country code first, then at the range.
- For +1, choose between the United States and Canada: same format, different area codes.
- If you need the number for months, check the price of 90 days: it costs less per day everywhere.
- If the country you need is not listed, write to support: stock changes and new countries can be added.
Is my country missing?
We publish a page only when we can describe the country with sourced facts. The checkout may offer other countries when they are in stock. Countries under international sanctions are not offered.
Regulators and number portability by country
| Country | Regulator | Mobile number portability |
|---|---|---|
| United States | FCC | Since November 2003 (largest 100 areas), May 2004 elsewhere |
| United Kingdom | Ofcom | Text "PAC" to 65075; switch within one working day since 1 July 2019 |
| Canada | CRTC | Since 14 March 2007 |
| Germany | Bundesnetzagentur | Free, active by the next working day (§ 59 TKG) |
| France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden | Arcep, ACM, CNMC, AGCOM, UKE, PTS | Yes, under the EU electronic communications code |
| Australia | ACMA | Since 25 September 2001 |
| Brazil | Anatel | Since 1 September 2008 |
| Mexico | CRT (IFT until October 2025) | Since 2008; at most 24 hours |
| Indonesia | Komdigi | None; before the Constitutional Court in 2026 |
Portability concerns numbers on your own contract. A rented number cannot be ported: you renew it, or you move your accounts to another number before the rental ends.
