What does a Swedish mobile number look like?
Swedish mobile numbers are 0 plus nine digits, in the 070, 072, 073, 076 and 079 series and part of 078, for example 070 123 45 67, or +46 70 123 45 67 from abroad. PTS, the regulator, has prepared a decision to open more of the 078 series to mobiles from 1 August 2026.
When did Sweden end unregistered prepaid cards?
Registration became mandatory on 1 August 2022, under amendments to the Electronic Communications Act; existing unregistered cards kept working until 1 February 2023. Visitors can still buy a prepaid card with a passport at a shop. For someone who does not want to show a passport for a temporary number, or who needs the number before arriving, a rental is the alternative.
Who rents a Swedish number?
People moving to Sweden who need texts from landlords, employers and shops before their personal number is set up, Swedes abroad, and sellers on second-hand marketplaces who keep their own number private. Swedish authentication for banks and public services relies on BankID rather than SMS codes, so a rented number is for everyday services, not for your identity.
