Rentals of 7, 30 or 90 days in 14 countries, renewable on the same number, with no app and no ID upload. $29 for 90 days in the US is $9.67 a month. It does not do calls, and a missed renewal ends the reservation.
Best for calls and texts: a second-number app
MySudo starts at $1.99 a month for one number, Hushed at $7.99 prepaid and Burner at $7.99 a month; all three include calls in their app, and most of their numbers are US, UK, Canadian or Australian. You need an app store account and a card or store payment.
Best for a full year on one UK number: SMSPool
Its public list showed a UK rental of 360 days for $55, the longest single period we found. Check whether the rental covers the services you need before paying.
Best for developers: a programmable number
Twilio lists a US local number at $1.15 a month plus $0.0083 per inbound SMS segment and carrier fees. It needs a developer account, verification steps for sending, and code; it is the right tool for an application, not for a person.

Is any virtual number permanent?
No rental is. You keep a number as long as you renew or pay the subscription; carriers and providers reissue numbers that are no longer used.
Which option needs no ID?
Rental sites in this list state no ID check for crypto payments; SMSPVA requires one for card payments. eSIM numbers can need an ID in some countries.
Which costs least per month?
