What changed for Indonesian SIM cards in 2026?

Since 31 October 2017 Indonesian prepaid SIMs are registered against the national ID number (NIK) and family card number. Permenkomdigi 7/2026, in force since 17 January 2026, goes further: from 1 July 2026 every new SIM or eSIM registration needs a face check against the civil registry, while existing numbers can opt in. Operators may not store the biometric data. About 6.8 million biometric registrations had been made by July 2026.

What does an Indonesian mobile number look like?

Mobiles start with 08 nationally, +62 8 from abroad, and are usually 10 to 13 digits long. The first digits after 08 traditionally point to the operator, and since Indonesia has no number portability, they still do: a number stays with the operator that issued it.

Who rents an Indonesian number?

Indonesians abroad who still receive texts from Indonesian marketplaces and apps, foreigners who deal with Indonesian platforms without a local SIM, and developers checking SMS delivery on the three operator groups that remain after the XLSmart merger.
