What does an Italian mobile number look like?

Italian mobile numbers start with 3, in the 32 to 39 ranges, and have nine or ten digits; new numbers have ten, for example 347 123 4567, or +39 347 123 4567 from abroad. Unlike landlines, which keep their leading 0 after +39, mobiles have no 0 at all.

Why does an Italian SIM need an ID?

Since the 2005 "Pisanu" decree, carried into article 98-undetricies of the Electronic Communications Code, operators must check an ID document and keep a copy before activating a SIM, and again for a SIM swap or a number port. A 2025 security decree added closures of 5 to 30 days for resellers that do not comply. A rental avoids the question: no SIM is issued to you.

Who rents an Italian number?

People spending a season in Italy, Italians abroad who still deal with Italian shops and services, and teams checking that their messages reach Italian networks. Italy has five significant mobile brands, and since the Fastweb and Vodafone combination three groups each hold about a quarter or more of all SIMs.

Can SPID or Italian banks use a rented number?

Digital identity and banking accounts should stay on a number you own. Some Italian identity providers have accepted foreign mobile numbers in the past, but we could not confirm the current rules, and a rental ends while those accounts do not.
