Quick answer

What is a rented phone number used for?

Mostly to receive texts without giving out a personal number: for listings and shops, while living abroad, to test an app's SMS, or for a side project. KeepANumber rents numbers for 7, 30 or 90 days from $8.50 (US, October 2026). Numbers receive SMS only and are used under our acceptable use policy.

Why rent rather than buy a SIM?

In 10 of the 14 countries we cover, a prepaid SIM must be registered with an ID: Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands have no such duty. A rental issues no SIM, needs no ID upload and stops by itself at the end date; the country pages give each rule with its source.

What is a rented number not for?

Anything that harms other people or breaks a service's rules: fraud, impersonation, harassment, opening accounts in someone else's name or getting back into a service that closed your account. The acceptable use policy lists what is not allowed; rentals used that way are closed.

Questions about use cases

Can one rented number serve several uses?

Yes, it receives every SMS sent to it during the rental. Separate rentals keep histories and end dates apart, which is easier to manage.

Which use needs the longest rental?

Anything tied to an account you keep: rent 90 days and renew, or move the account to a number you own.

Is there a use you advise against?

Banking and government accounts: they last for years and often require a number in your name.
