Why does an Australian number cost more?
Because comparable rentals cost more. On 18 October 2026 SMSPool's public price list showed an Australian number at $40 for 30 days, against $18 to $20 for US and UK numbers. Our $30 for 30 days follows the same rule as every other country: a public reference price, reduced.
What does an Australian mobile number look like?
Australian mobiles are 04XX XXX XXX, ten digits, written +61 4XX XXX XXX from abroad without the 0. The 05 range is also designated for mobiles in the plan ACMA filed with the ITU in March 2026, but almost all numbers in use start with 04.
Do you need an ID for an Australian SIM card?
Yes. Under the Prepaid Determination 2017, a carrier must verify your identity before activating a prepaid service; ACMA amended the rules in December 2025 to allow Digital ID checks. The rules are enforced: in 2025 ACMA found that Telstra had activated 18,388 services without the required checks. A rental gives you a number without a SIM in your name.
What changed for SMS in Australia in 2026?
Since 1 July 2026 the ACMA SMS Sender ID Register applies: messages from alphanumeric sender names that are not registered are labelled "Unverified". Numeric senders are not affected. myGov, for its part, sends SMS codes abroad only to the Australian number registered on your account, with roaming on, so keep myGov on your own number.
