Why some services reject virtual phone numbers

Last updated

Quick answer

Why was my virtual number rejected?

Services look up a number before texting it, often on 3 points: its country, its type (mobile, landline or VoIP) and its history. A rented number can fail any of those checks, and rules change without notice. No rental site can guarantee acceptance by a third party; KeepANumber does not either (October 2026).

What do services check?

What is the difference between VoIP and non-VoIP numbers?

A non-VoIP number belongs to a mobile network and usually sits on a physical SIM; some rental sites, such as TextVerified, say all their numbers are on SIM cards. A VoIP number is issued by an internet telephony provider. Services that refuse VoIP do it because such numbers are easier to obtain in quantity. The type alone does not decide everything: country and history checks still apply.

What can I do if a number is refused?

What we will not do

We do not help get around a service's decision. If a service refuses virtual numbers or has closed your account, a rental is not the answer, and using one for that is against our acceptable use policy.

Questions about refused numbers

Do you publish a list of services that accept your numbers?

No. Acceptance changes without notice and we would rather not promise what a third party decides.

Will another country work better?

Sometimes, if the service accepts that country. Choose the country the service expects.

Is a refused number refunded?

The refund policy explains what is credited back and when.
