What happens when a phone number rental expires

Quick answer

What happens when my rented number expires?

At the end date, 7, 30 or 90 days after activation, new SMS to the number stop appearing in your dashboard and the number is no longer reserved for you. It can later be rented to someone else. Renew before the end date, or change the number on your accounts first (KeepANumber rules, October 2026).

Why can an expired number go to someone else?

Phone numbers are a limited resource. Operators reissue numbers that are no longer used: OnlineSIM's FAQ notes that an operator can reissue a SIM two to three months after it becomes inactive, and rental sites put unrenewed numbers back in their pool, as VirtualSMS states on its rental page. KeepANumber works the same way: after the end date, the number may be rented again later.

What is the risk for my accounts?

Every account that still lists the number will send its texts to the next person who has it. For most accounts that only means lost messages. For an account where the number is the only way to reset a password, it can mean someone else receives that reset code. That is why the number should never be your only way into an account you care about.

A checklist before the end date

  1. Look at the end date on the rental page. Decide a week before whether you keep the number.
  2. To keep it, renew from the rental page: 7, 30 or 90 more days on the same number.
  3. To let it go, list the accounts that use it and change the number on each one first.
  4. On accounts you keep, add an authenticator app, a passkey or backup codes.
  5. Then let the rental end.

Can I get a number back after it expired?

Not reliably. Once the end date has passed, the number is not reserved for you; it may still be free or may already be rented again. Some providers charge to restore a number: TextVerified, for example, asks a $10 fee plus the elapsed time to reactivate an expired number. We prefer to say plainly: renew before the end date.

Questions about expiry

Are my old messages deleted at the end date?

How long received SMS stay visible after a rental ends is set out in the privacy policy.

Do you warn me before the end date?

The end date and the time left are shown on the rental page. Do not rely on a reminder: note the date yourself.

Can I renew for a different period?

Yes. A renewal can be 7, 30 or 90 days, whatever the first period was.
