## What does a UK mobile number look like?

UK mobile numbers start with 07 and have 11 digits, for example 07700 900123, or +44 7700 900123 from abroad (drop the leading 0 after +44). Ofcom's plan, as published by the ITU in January 2025, puts mobiles in the 071–075 and 077–079 ranges. 076 is used for pagers and 070 for "personal numbers" that forward calls, so neither looks like an ordinary mobile to a service that checks.

## Who rents a UK number?

People who moved out of the UK and still deal with UK shops, landlords or employers; people abroad who need to receive texts from a UK service; and UK residents who do not want to give their own number to a listing or a one-off purchase. A rental covers the weeks or months you need it, then stops.

## Will GOV.UK or a UK bank text a rented number?

Do not count on it for those accounts. GOV.UK One Login says it cannot send a security code by text to a phone number registered outside the UK, and recommends an authenticator app instead; its guidance was updated on 28 July 2026. Government and banking accounts are meant to stay with you for years, so use a number you own long-term, or the authenticator app, for them. A rental ends, and with it your access to the codes.

## Do you need an ID for a UK SIM card?

No. The UK has no registration duty for prepaid SIM cards; the GSMA lists it among the governments that chose not to mandate it. Bank-style sender names are protected separately: the MEF SMS SenderID Protection Registry, backed by the NCSC and UK Finance, blocks spoofed sender names of registered brands.

## Questions about UK numbers

### Is a rented UK number a mobile number?

Yes, rentals are UK mobile numbers in the 07 range shown above.

### Can I port a rented UK number to my own SIM?

No. A PAC code is for numbers on your own contract. A rental is the use of a number for a period.

### Can I get a London 020 number?

No, we only rent mobile numbers, which are national and have no area code.
