## What does a Polish mobile number look like?

Every Polish number has nine digits and no trunk zero. Mobiles start with 45, 50, 51, 53, 57, 60, 66, 69, 72, 73, 78, 79 or 88, for example 512 345 678, or +48 512 345 678 from abroad. The prefix once told you the operator; with number portability it no longer does.

## Why must Polish prepaid SIMs be registered?

The anti-terrorism act of 10 June 2016 made registration compulsory: name and PESEL number or ID document, and for people from outside the EU or Switzerland a passport or residence card number. Unregistered cards were cut off on 1 February 2017; according to UKE, 68.7 % of prepaid cards had been registered by then, and an estimated 12 million were switched off.

## Who rents a Polish number?

People working in Poland for a few months, Polish residents abroad who still receive texts from Polish shops and couriers, and developers checking their SMS on Polish networks. UKE counted 67.2 million active SIM cards at the end of 2025, 14 million of them machine-to-machine, in a country of about 37 million people.
