A one-time SMS number usually lives for minutes. 5SIM, for example, says its numbers last 10 to 20 minutes and that longer use is "currently unavailable". That is enough for one code, but the account you open keeps the number on file. When the service texts you again, for a new device, a password reset or a routine check, a one-time number is gone. A rented number stays yours for the whole period, so later texts still reach you. Many US services ask for a US mobile number at sign-up and send codes to it later: marketplaces, delivery and banking-adjacent apps, US-based software trials. A rented +1 number lets you receive those texts from anywhere, without a US SIM or a US address. It is also a clean way to keep your own number off US mailing lists. ## What does a US mobile number look like? US numbers follow the North American Numbering Plan: ten digits written NPA-NXX-XXXX, for example (212) 555-0142, or +1 212 555 0142 internationally. Unlike most countries, the US has no separate mobile range, so the area code tells you a place, not whether the line is a mobile. Canada and several Caribbean countries share the same +1 code. You choose the country when you rent; the area code is assigned from stock. ## Do you need an ID for a US SIM card? No federal law requires it. The GSMA lists the United States among the governments that decided against mandatory registration of prepaid SIM cards. Carriers still ask for details for postpaid plans, and since FCC rules adopted on 15 November 2023 they must authenticate a customer before a SIM swap or a port-out. ## What should you know about SMS in the US? Under FCC 23-21 (adopted 16 March 2023), mobile carriers must block texts that come from invalid, unallocated or unused numbers. Businesses that text from ordinary 10-digit numbers register their campaigns with The Campaign Registry (the "10DLC" system run by the carriers), and toll-free senders go through carrier verification. In practice most codes you receive come from short codes of five or six digits or from registered business numbers. ## Questions about US numbers ### Can I choose a New York or California area code? UK mobile numbers start with 07 and have 11 digits, for example 07700 900123, or +44 7700 900123 from abroad (drop the leading 0 after +44). Ofcom's plan, as published by the ITU in January 2025, puts mobiles in the 071–075 and 077–079 ranges. 076 is used for pagers and 070 for "personal numbers" that forward calls, so neither looks like an ordinary mobile to a service that checks. ## Who rents a UK number? People who moved out of the UK and still deal with UK shops, landlords or employers; people abroad who need to receive texts from a UK service; and UK residents who do not want to give their own number to a listing or a one-off purchase. A rental covers the weeks or months you need it, then stops. ## Will GOV.UK or a UK bank text a rented number? Do not count on it for those accounts. GOV.UK One Login says it cannot send a security code by text to a phone number registered outside the UK, and recommends an authenticator app instead; its guidance was updated on 28 July 2026. Government and banking accounts are meant to stay with you for years, so use a number you own long-term, or the authenticator app, for them. A rental ends, and with it your access to the codes. ## Do you need an ID for a UK SIM card? No. The UK has no registration duty for prepaid SIM cards; the GSMA lists it among the governments that chose not to mandate it. Both use +1 and the same ten-digit format, so on paper a Canadian number looks exactly like a US one. The difference is the area code: 416 and 647 are Toronto, 514 and 438 Montreal, 604 and 778 Vancouver, and so on. A form that only asks for "+1" cannot tell them apart, but the service behind it often checks the area code. Pick Canada if the service expects a Canadian customer. ## Who uses a Canadian rental? Since 1 July 2017 every German prepaid SIM must be linked to a verified identity before it is activated. The rule began as § 111 of the Telecommunications Act, added by the 2016 anti-terror law, and is now § 172 TKG. The Bundesnetzagentur lists the accepted checks (in-store ID, video identification, eID and others) in its Verfügung 94/2021. If you live abroad or prefer not to upload a passport for a second number, that makes a local SIM impractical. ## What does a German mobile number look like? German mobiles start with 015, 016 or 017 nationally, written +49 15x, +49 16x or +49 17x from abroad without the 0. Numbers in the 015x range have 11 digits after the 0, for example 0151 2345 6789; 016x and 017x numbers have 10 or 11. The 0164, 0168 and 0169 ranges are paging services, according to the plan the Bundesnetzagentur filed with the ITU in August 2025. ## Who rents a German number? People who moved to or from Germany and need texts from German shops, classifieds, delivery and rental platforms while their paperwork catches up; people testing their own app with German users; and anyone who wants a number for a listing that they can drop afterwards. For your bank or a public authority, use your own number: those accounts outlive any rental. ## How does porting work in Germany? Under § 59 TKG a number moves for free to a new provider and must work there by the next working day; customers can claim compensation for each day of delay. This concerns numbers on your own contract. A rental cannot be ported: you renew it, or you move your accounts to another number before it ends. ## Questions about German numbers ### Do I need a German address to rent a German number? French mobile numbers have ten digits and start with 06 or 07, for example 06 12 34 56 78, written +33 6 12 34 56 78 from abroad. Arcep's plan, filed with the ITU in April 2026, gives the 06 range and 073 to 078 to mobiles, and keeps 0700 for 14-digit machine-to-machine lines. ## Why do French codes not come from 06 or 07 numbers? Since Arcep decision 2022-1583 of 5 September 2022, 06 and 07 numbers are reserved for person-to-person communication. Apart from specific cases, automated systems may not use them to send calls or SMS. So the codes French services send come from short numbers or named senders, while 06 and 07 numbers stay for people. That is also why a rented French mobile number reads as an ordinary personal number to the people you give it to. ## Do you need an ID for a French SIM card? Yes. Operators ask for an ID card, a passport or a residence permit; Orange describes it as a legal obligation since 2016. For someone abroad, or for a short need, a rental is simpler: no SIM is issued, so no document is asked for. ## Who rents a French number? Dutch mobiles are 06 followed by eight digits, for example 06 12345678, or +31 6 12345678 from abroad. The 097 range is set aside for machine and automated uses, so it does not look like a personal number to a service that checks. The plan is set by the ministry; ACM, the regulator, assigns the numbers. ## Is there SIM registration in the Netherlands? No. In 2019 the minister of justice rejected a registration duty for prepaid SIM cards, after a 2017 assessment found no significant benefit for investigations. We found no later change. Dutch operators still ask for details for subscriptions. ## Can DigiD send its SMS code to a rented number? Spanish numbers have nine digits and no trunk zero. Mobiles start with 6, or with 71 to 74; the 75 to 79 ranges are reserved. From abroad you write +34 612 345 678. Because there is no leading 0, a number written the Spanish way and the international way only differ by the +34. ## Do you need an ID for a Spanish SIM card? Yes. Ley 25/2007, in force since 8 November 2007, obliges operators to keep a register of prepaid customers with their name, nationality and the type and number of their ID document; older cards had two years to be registered or were switched off. Phone numbers are a limited resource. Operators reissue numbers that are no longer used: OnlineSIM's FAQ notes that an operator can reissue a SIM two to three months after it becomes inactive, and rental sites put unrenewed numbers back in their pool, as VirtualSMS states on its rental page. KeepANumber works the same way: after the end date, the number may be rented again later. ## What is the risk for my accounts? Every account that still lists the number will send its texts to the next person who has it. For most accounts that only means lost messages. For an account where the number is the only way to reset a password, it can mean someone else receives that reset code. That is why the number should never be your only way into an account you care about. ## A checklist before the end date 1. Look at the end date on the rental page. Decide a week before whether you keep the number. 2. To keep it, renew from the rental page: 7, 30 or 90 more days on the same number. 3. US numbers only. ## 4. JuicySMS: packages in euros Packages of €15 for one month, €30 for three, €50 for six and €70 for a year, the same for its US, UK, Dutch and German selector. It describes its numbers as real mobile SIMs, offers auto-renewal with a three-day grace period, and states that refunds are not available once a number is assigned. Minimum deposit €10. ## 5. VirtualSMS: European full-access rentals "Full Access" rentals receive texts from any service, from $4.99 a day to $44.99 for 30 days depending on the country; the US is not listed for this plan. No, the number is assigned from stock in the country you choose. ### Can the number make calls or send texts? No. It receives SMS only. ## Account and payment ### Do I need an ID?
