**Quick answer: Why was my virtual number rejected?**

Services look up a number before texting it, often on 3 points: its country, its type (mobile, landline or VoIP) and its history. A rented number can fail any of those checks, and rules change without notice. No rental site can guarantee acceptance by a third party; KeepANumber does not either (October 2026).

## What do services check?

- **The country code.** Many services only accept numbers from the countries where they operate. GOV.UK One Login, for instance, cannot text codes to numbers registered outside the UK.
- **The number type.** Lookups tell a service whether a number belongs to a mobile network, a landline or a VoIP provider. Some services refuse anything that is not a mobile.
- **The range.** Some ranges are not for people at all: 076 pagers and 070 personal numbers in the UK, 097 machine numbers in the Netherlands, 0700 machine-to-machine lines in France.
- **The history.** A number already used by many accounts on the same service can be blocked by that service.

## What is the difference between VoIP and non-VoIP numbers?

A non-VoIP number belongs to a mobile network and usually sits on a physical SIM; some rental sites, such as TextVerified, say all their numbers are on SIM cards. A VoIP number is issued by an internet telephony provider. Services that refuse VoIP do it because such numbers are easier to obtain in quantity. The type alone does not decide everything: country and history checks still apply.

## What can I do if a number is refused?

- Check that you entered it in international form, with the right country selected.
- Check whether the service accepts numbers from that country at all.
- If no SMS at all arrives during the rental, write to support with the rental reference: the case is handled under the [refund policy](https://keepanumber.com/refund-policy).
- If the service insists on a number in your name, use your own number for that account.

## What we will not do

We do not help get around a service's decision. If a service refuses virtual numbers or has closed your account, a rental is not the answer, and using one for that is against our [acceptable use policy](https://keepanumber.com/acceptable-use).

## Questions about refused numbers

### Do you publish a list of services that accept your numbers?

No. Acceptance changes without notice and we would rather not promise what a third party decides.

### Will another country work better?

Sometimes, if the service accepts that country. Choose the country the service expects.

### Is a refused number refunded?

The [refund policy](https://keepanumber.com/refund-policy) explains what is credited back and when.
